McCarville comes through with last-rock win
VICTORIA, February 22, 2009... Ontario skip Krista McCarville saved her best shot for last on Sunday morning at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria.
Moments after missing her first shot of the 10th end — coming up heavy on a draw attempt — the 26-year-old McCarville made a lovely angle-tap to the button to score the winning point in an 8-7 victory over Saskatchewan's Stefanie Lawton in Draw 3 action at the Scotties Tournament of Hearts Canadian women's curling championship.
With the win, McCarville and her team from the Fort William Curling Club in Thunder Bay — third Tara George, second Kari MacLean and lead Lorraine Lang — improve to 2-0, while Lawton drops to 0-2.
In the other morning game, B.C.'s Marla Mallett moved into a four-way tie for first place at 2-0 with a 9-8 extra-end win over Newfoundland/Labrador's Heather Strong.
Strong (0-2) forced the extra with a deuce in the 10th end, and had a rock buried behind a centre guard in the 11th, but Mallett was able to throw a hack-weight takeout and remove the counter for the victory.
Quebec's Marie-France Larouche (2-0), P.E.I.'s Rebecca Jean MacPhee (2-0), Team Canada's Jennifer Jones (1-0), Nova Scotia's Nancy McConnery (1-0), Alberta's Cheryl Bernard (0-1), Manitoba's Barb Spencer (0-1), New Brunswick's Andrea Kelly (0-2) and Kerry Galusha of the Northwest Territories.
Play at the Scotties continues today with draws at 4 p.m. (all times Eastern) and 9:30; both draws will be televised by TSN.
