Ontario, Alberta Survive Major Scares

CALGARY, March 9, 2009 -- Alberta's Kevin Martin and Ontario's Glenn Howard head into Day 4 here Tuesday morning at the 2009 Tim Hortons Brier as the only undefeated teams still remaining in the field and counting themselves both very fortunate.

Howard needed a last rock, around-the-clock angle raised double-takeout for three to eke out a 7-6 win over a shocked Joel Jordison of Saskatchewan, who led by two and was lying two when Howard threw up his last-rock prayer.

The win improved Ontario to 5-0 and Howard instantly christened it one of the highlights of his storied curling career.

"That," Howard said afterward, "is probably the greatest shot I've ever thrown to win a game."

Alberta's Martin, on the other hand, never led in his entire game against Newfoundland's Brad Gushue -- except when it counted most.

Gushue left Martin an open hit for two with the last rock of the game after his last rock of the 10th end overcurled and set up a jam. Martin made no mistake and scored a deuce to win 5-4 and also improve to 5-0.

Like Howard, the defending Brier champion was also counting himself fortunate afterward. "What a game," Martin gushed afterward. "And I would have said that if I lost. Just tremendous curling."

In other games on the Monday evening draw, BC's Sean Geall defeated Quebec's Jean-Michel Menard 7-3 and New Brunswick's Russ Howard beat Northern Ontario's Mike Jakubo 9-6.
