Saskatchewan will have a new representative at the Tim Hortons Brier
Top-seeded Joel Jordison, representing the Bushell Park Curling Club in Moose Jaw, beat four-time defending champion Pat Simmons of Davidson, 6-4 in the final of the SaskTel Tankard Sunday in Meadow Lake.
Simmons, who had equalled Bob 'PeeWee' Pickering's record of four straight provincial titles when he won last year, was thus denied a chance to make history.
Jordison lost twice to Simmons during the Tankard, 8-6 in the A vs B Page Playoff game, after also dropping the A final, 7-6 in an extra end. But the third time proved the charm.
Jordison won the 'B' final, 6-4 over Al Schick of Regina. In the 'C' finals, Schick defeated Brent Gadek, 9-8 while Brad Heidt of Kerrobert downed Jason Ackerman, 5-2 to advance to the C1 vs C2 page playoff, which Heidt won.
Jordison then defeated Heidt, 7-4 in Sunday morning's semi-final to advance to the championship game.
Jordison is joined by third Scott Bitz, second Aryn Schmidt and lead Dean Hicke. Only Bitz has previous Brier experience, having skipped Saskatchewan in 2002 in Calgary, finishing the round robin with a 7-4 mark, tied for third, before losing the Page Playoff 3-4 game to New Brunswick's Russ Howard.
Saskatchewan has won seven Briers, but the latest victory was back in 1980, courtesy of Rick Folk.
